Description: Covers Chadwick's Artist in Industry Scheme placement with Yorkshire Arts
and John Smith's brewery around the north of England during 1981. This was exhibited at
Cartwright Hall, Bradford. The notebook acts as a journal of the placement and Chadwick's
tours and interviews with the brewery, its staff and the customers of the pubs and clubs
belonging to John Smith's. It includes notes on a tour of the Tadcaster brewery; notes on
meetings with managers and tenants of pubs and clubs detailing their variety and difference in
style and attitude; Chadwick's overall impressions and the differences between the social
spaces of clubs and pubs; notes on the questions Chadwick asked customers including what
they thought of art; notes on the symbol of the beer mat as an equaliser between all
establishments and classes and the development of the beer mat as a basis for the art work;
reference to Stephen Willats' ''Contro''' magazine; ideas for a 'self-portrait with an
artist's kit-bag'; notes on sound recordings possibly for Audio Arts; notes for the
catalogue of the Bradford exhibition. At the back of the notebook are details on stockists
of materials; descriptions and sketches of rooms in pubs possibly used as installations
in the exhibition; list of areas visited and researched; notes on 'pub voices'
sound piece; list of expenses and camera instructions.
